Raymond Weil, classic watch.

There is a type of watches, which could be timeless. This is a dress watch. Despite many definitions of dress watch existing in the minds there is no unity. In my eyes the Raymond Weil gold/white/black embodies the true formal dress watch. I not going to ask why you should have such watch ,rather what makes it a great watch.

Tastes are obviously different, however formal event with tie can come with either suit or tuxedo. Think of the weeding, formal ceremony or something normal folks not going to attend very often. You wear black shoes, black tie, white shirt and cuffs. Also you wear this watch. Gold thin case with rounded corners and protected crown making RW very comfortable to wear and it would spring under your sleeve with no effort.

Tall, thin roman numerals look elegant and less intimidating than they could. Numerals hint two circles one outer and other inner, leaving very subtle impression of more textured watch face than it actually is.  Golden studs at hour positions add intrigue and texture to the watch face by playing in the light. Watch hands, white and black contrast of the dial , size of the numerals make it perfect watch to tell the time at any angle.

Yes you not looking directly at your watch, yet you can sneak time telling. Watch is date with no second hand thus quiet and have no disturbance in the look. Watch’s posture is serine and beautiful, yet a bit cold. Originally watch came with gold bracelet and added heft of it. I replaced bracelet with plain soft black leather band. On the band watch become light and even more visible by gold/black contrast. Legibility is superb. You can tell time at any moment even at candlelight (never tested this claim). Watch come on 15 stones in the movement and keeps perfect time. Mechanically and esthetically it is good watch. It not as simple as it looks. It obvious opposite of many modern watches which grew bigger, more pretentious and in some sad occasions lost their purpose of device telling you time as clear as possible.

Truth is tuxedo was comfortable and less formal suit for man to relax and enjoy life. Part of these genes are present in RW. Watch is very comfortable and not going to steal much of your efforts especially sans bracelet. Is it today’s everyday watch? May be if you office casual or event casual. It is not your usual everyday watch, yet it can be hip and great companion if your sense of style will play nice harmonicas. Looking at this watch you can hear bells of mantel clock or imagine some open view of the ocean beach with not many distractions. Some loose cable knit sweater and khaki pants, dunes, fences and constant roar of the waves. For me this watch is unobstructed cool freedom and I don’t hear old clock. It a ocean time for me.I wear this watch to relax.
