Metallurgy 2.12 pt2

So years have passed.    Literally years.   What changed?   Like many movies story can benefit from editing. Cuts, shuffles and mixed timeline as far as it brings the edge. In line with it let start with the end. Where we now?   So far most of manufacturing was moved out and it will be really hard to move it back. Range of options for metallurgist to be employed are welding, construction (not much and mostly welding) making things and researching things. Some automotive manufacturing, pipe lining, natural resources, novel things like 3D printing and infrastructure. Welding seem to be very common but metallurgist does not weld, he may check it if it failed, select materials and teach upcoming welders (if institution thinks it's more important to focus on what is going on and less on how it done). There are very few opportunities and they often as common as neurosurgeons. Manufacturing revolves around Quality Control and some optional R&D and in current crisis positions dropped s

Upcoming Galaxy Watch 4

There is upcoming Samsung Unpacked event in late April. From release times of the past we know this year there will be some new Samsung Watch. So far there are candidates 1. Replacement of Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 2. Replacement of Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 3. Some new watch which is not in the series I am positive Active 3 should take a place this year and be out before holiday season of 2021. There is no immediate need for it but time vise it should. Active 2 shares exact same internals as Galaxy Watch 3 and it's latest and greatest Samsung has to offer. There is not much point in replacing it just software improvements/enhancements would of been fine. Compared to my Gear Sport it's very snappy, comes with speaker, has latest GR/blood pressure/VO etc. capable sensors. Which still not approved for EKG and blood pressure in Canada. So even almost 2 years after lunch watch still have not reached it's full potential. Neither GW3 for that matter. Still i th

Lorus Sports V532. Lunious dial.

Image
Lorus is sub brand of Seiko and as such comes with Pulsar and Alba to cover lover end of the market. They are more expensive than your regular Casio or Timex and somehow on part with simple Edifice or more posh Timex models. Why should you buy it? What is special about it? Not mach actually it may win on some design aspects like this model with luminous dial. Let dig into it and go through cons and pros. I will start with covering watch itself as is no design perk in it. It fairly cheap watch with slim profile, date only. Movement have metal build and been around for quite time. Nothing special. Bracelet is flimsy and sometime borderline uncomfortable as you may expect from affordable watch. 100m WR is sufficient for all. Shape is nice and size is on smaller side but sits perfectly. Hands have too much of free play when you set up time. Lorus as well as Pulsar did not win my heart as reliable watches. Unlike Seiko if you pick used one (like i did) you may get another dead weight. Despi

MEtallurgy 2.12 part 1. Intro.

I am going to post series of short pieces about metallurgy. Title is Metallurgy 2.12. Why? It sounds about right and I am going to explain why a bit later. Bethlehem steel, glorious birthplace of every single gun of US battleships become amusement park with casino. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bethlehem_Steel https://www.discoverlehighvalley.com/listing/steelstacks™/3063/  Move seems like deed by Bender from Futurama (referring to second episode in season 1) but it hardly joyful view for me. Metallurgy, it’s place in the today’s world and how people live with such occupation changed in years past and it will in years to come. Before I start talking about Metallurgy 2.12 I want to ask simple question. Who is metallurgist and what this professional does? Think about it. Let’s compare notes!

Casio Edifice EQS-500, it’s alive!

There is no doubt digital watch has upper hand when it comes to functionality. It is limitless, at least in theory. Despite that people who think about expensive watch gravitate towards analog options and chronographs with multiple sub dials to fit functionality. Clock work can be very complex and show you all the things in the celestial world. Edifice EQS-500 is modern middle ground between digital functionality and convince and analog time data delivery. As usual , long time ago there was Citizen… Citizen came out with analog watches filled with multiple digital functions: timer, alarms, chronograph. It was not really convenient at the time due to relative simplicity of the set up – you got one motor or two to move hands around and it took long time to actually set up something like alarm or return to current time. It was 5 minute affair, comparing to digital 1 minute. Analog digital combo had both worlds covert, yet failed out of grace. Most prominent Citizen watches enjoye

Timex Atlantis 1984 vs 2010. Old school

Image
There are many wisdom sentences. One of them about history repeating itself. I recently got lucky to find Timex Atlantis 100 made in 1985. I happened to have more current 2010 Timex Expedition Atlantis. It was tempting to compare these watches. Where to start?  In 1984 digital watches were THE thing among anyone who can’t afford something snooty. Casio, Seiko, Citizen were producing amazing watches. Timex at the time had less choices to offer. It was not time for Ironman yet. As I write it I picture all that excitement of new electronic things coming out almost every day. We relived it in a way with computers, later with phones and who knows what will be next. Constant race to invent, excite and make money. There are some stories about how it came to be, yet looking at the watch I can see choices, cuts and decisions.  Atlantis was made to be high profile entry into digital watch market. Market which already filled with other watches, Timex included. What should be done
